Summer is not even technically here yet and it is HOT here in NYC. It is August hot. It was over 90 degrees just the other day. When it gets like this, ain't nobody got time for dark heavy makeup. Don't you just look at a black smokey eye in this heat and say no thank you! I don't want to put it on someone else, never-mind myself. But that does not mean I want to give up the drama. I want a smoldering look but I don't want the density of a black smokey eye. My solution is Bronze baby! Why is it perfect for a summer smokey eye? Because, it makes a statement without being too heavy. It's sexy and smoldering without feeling like Winter or Fall.
It's time to substitute blacks and silvers for bronze, browns and golden colors. Bronze is easy and flattering to literally ANY skin tone. It's also perfect for any eye shape. It opens the eye up. It also fades gracefully. All you need is a good shadow palette, (I love the Urban Decay Naked 2 pallet) some black mascara, and a good blending brush.
With such a wide array of colors options out there, I leave the combinations of shades up to your imagination ...Here is the great thing... Bronze is an equal opportunity glowing color. Personally, I prefer to stick with more of satin formula eye shadows to big shimmery shades, especially for a more mature woman. But when used with a delicate hand this gilded look is safe for most any age.
Preparation: Prep lids with concealer to even out any discoloration and give shadow a base to stick to, then sweep a wash of purple from lash line to crease.
Step 1 and 2. Press a medium bronze shadow from lash line to crease and softly blend the edges. Then, apply the same color underneath the lash line in a thick swipe.
Step 3 and 4. Eye shadows stay longer when applied with a damp brush. Dampen an eyeliner brush to apply a brown shadow liner and blend upward. Then, use the same brown shadow underneath the lash line in a thin swipe.
Step 5 and 6. Make your eyes pop. Darken the lash line more with a black shadow liner and blend upward using the same damp brush. Be sure to do the same on the underneath lash line. For a nice contrast apply a color like Laura Mercier Kohl Pencil in Brown Copper ($24; Laura Mercier) on the corner of the eye.
Step 7. Lightly add a shimmery shadow. Dab a copper shadow, a few shades lighter than the bronze one, across the lid to soften the look and add dimension.
Step 8. Very lightly trace your eye and blend in a dark brown or black eyeliner, fix with a matte dark brown shadow. Outline starting from the inner corner going all the way around the entire eye. This creates more depth and really plays up the smokiness of the look.
Step 9. Highlight the inner corner of your eye. Apply a shade like Laura Mercier Caviar eye sticks in Gilded Gold. ($28; Laura Mercier) just inside the inner corner of the eye for contrast.
Step 10. Apply two coats of your favorite black mascara.
There are so many variations on this look and they are all sexy! No matter which trend you go for, keep the rest of your makeup to a minimum for the most natural—and no-hassle—look. Also, the darker your skin, the more the bronze will contrast with your complexion, making it perfect for nighttime looks. Play, have fun! A bronze smokey eye is such a wonderful sexy summer look!
Red: The color of passion, the color of love. It's probably the sexiest color around and when painted on your lips, it's dynamite. It instantly glamorizes your look. Even the act of applying red lipstick is empowering. By dressing your lips in red, it draws people’s attention to you, especially your mouth, and subsequently, the words that come out of it. ‘It’s a symbol of prowess and power. But, a lot of us are scared of those bold red lips. Don't be, most of the time it's trial and error... for me personally it took a long time to find my favorites. Please, when testing them in the store, before you buy, put them on your mouth...not on your hand.
Here are a few of the best red lipsticks for women of any color.
As a rule of thumb, warm reds suit warm skin tone and likewise for cool reds. Cool reds usually have a little hint of blue added in so if you notice, some of them might even look a little purple. Warm reds appear slightly more orange-y. If you are unsure, go for a true red as it suits most skin tones as choosing a shade with orange based coloring can turn sexy to scary real quick.
Your skin tone is the number one factor to consider when picking out the perfect red. A simple guide:
Fair Skin – a blue based red, such as Mac’s Ruby Woo, will compliment your skin tone perfectly. It will also make your teeth appear whiter and give your fair skin a glow. For a pinkish complexion a matte red lipstick that slightly errs on this side of orange works to bring out the undertones. For a fair with yellow undertones cool tones of pinks are less flattering, so a choice of a warm brick lipstick is right on the money. Another color options for you would be Clinique High Impact Lip Colour SPF 15 in Sassy Spice, $16.
Medium skin to olive toned skin – Reds with a hint of orange undertones are a great shade and will make medium skin appear more golden. Interesting choice here is Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Petillante, $36, available at Chanel.
Dark skin – reds with shades of pink will give dark skinned lips a sexy pout that is #2DIE4! #Lupita N’Yongo is known for rocking scarlet lips on the red carpet. She wears an honorable mention, Tom Ford’s lip color in Cherry Lush ($50) is the perfect hint of pinkish red shade for darker skin.
#Beyonce's is rocking the red lip color at the top of this blog. I can not say for sure, but, I think she is wearing #Dolce & Gabbana Sicilian Jewels Collection lipstick in Rubino. It was from holiday collections from two years ago... and damn if I can't find it anywhere to purchase online.

Avoiding the classic red-toothed smile. Immediately after you’ve applied your lipstick, discretely place your index finger in your mouth, gently close your lips around it, then pull it out. The excess lipstick will come off on your finger rather than your teeth.
