Perez Hilton had a photo of Rihanna rocking deep ruby lipstick right after the 4th of July early this week. Why can't we roll like RiRi and wear red all year round? Guess what - we can! I hate rules and if any rules were meant to be broken, it's makeup rules. So, how about this summer we put down the pinks and be bold.
I had an African woman ask me to help her pick a new lip gloss today. She was a pretty dark skin lady. I put her in NARS Sixties Fan (see above). It's a deep pomegranate color. She said timidly, "Can wear this in the Summer?" I was like, "Who said you can't?" So many rules and so little time. I'm so tired of beauty editors telling us what not to put on our face. I want permission not restrictions. If you want to put on a deeper color in the summer, for the love of god, do it. Go right now and dig around in your makeup bag and get out your favorite dark lip color. Or go buy one today, I love Chanel Rivoli too! I've listed below a couple more colors I love below.
So just to be clear. Yes, I believe that a dark lip color can be even sexier in the summer. So many women believe that warm weather calls for the frothy light hues and sure I get it. But what better way to make a statement than with a bold berry or cherry red lip worn “out of season” in a sea of sheer pinks and poppy reds? Go big or go home. This is how we work it. Try minimal eye makeup framed by clean, well-groomed brows, which is the key to making your dark lipstick of choice work for summer. Please always use a lip brush when working with pigmented shades, and try to leave the matte lipsticks in the back of the drawer in favor of a sheer or moisturizing formula, like the super-nourishing, comfortable Votre Vu French Kiss Moisture Riche Lipstick in Margaux ($23, votrevu.com). A less bold look is Bite Beauty Lush Lip Tint in Blackcurrant ($24, sephora.com) for just a touch of color. Two more great colors are below, One is from NARS and the other is from Revlon.
